Many Biometric packages for capturing fingerprints do not store an image of the fingerprint, but merely several reference points to match the user with an existing database on a closed system. These reference points have NO value to anyone who is able to hack into the security system.

In many cases fingerprint data is actually stored on a biometric ID card and the system matches the current scan with data stored on the card. Other systems store the data on the reader, while others store the data on a server.

Combining Biometric data with the actual card brings security to a whole new level. For the first time, an organization will know WHO actually holds the card. Before reaching this level, ID access cards that do not require validation were only 1 level away from no security at all.

In addition to the biometric benefits, Mifare® cards & tags offer the flexibility of an ISO standard, and are available from many different vendors. This has for the first time provided the end user with the option of sourcing readers & cards from any vendor & not be tied to the proprietary encoding format of a particular manufacturer.

These cards & tags have the ability to store information about the cardholder and can also be used as a stored value card.

Other biometric options include;- Facial or retinal scans & hand scans. Several manufacturers offer these products.
